Growth Export Dutch Water Sector

With the ‘Water Sector Export Index’ (WEX), Panteia provides insight into yearly trends in the international performance of the Dutch water sector. This summer, the most recent results were published.

The Water Sector Export index (WEX) is an index number created by Panteia for the export of water activities. Special attention is given to the delta technology and the water technology sectors. The index is updated yearly and is mostly based on statistics, supplemented with a questionnaire among several market players. Using these combined data, a provisional conclusion based on realisations and a prognosis are presented.

The new report offers more definitive results for 2021, provisional results for 2022 and prognoses for 2023. After a downward trend in 2020 due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, there was growth in 2021. The index number rose, and with slightly over 8.1 billion, the export value of the Dutch water sector was back at the level of 2019. The provisional results for 2022 and the prognoses for 2023 are also positive. Important export markets are Europe, especially neighbouring countries Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom, and North America and Bangladesh. Important themes in the international water sector are climate change and sustainability.

The research is commissioned by the Netherlands Water Partnership, in collaboration with Water Alliance and Topsector Water & Maritime. It is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water. The full report, in Dutch, can be requested at the website of the Netherlands Water Partnership.
