Key Figures Dutch Coach Sector 2024

Panteia conducts annual research into developments in coach transport by Dutch coach operators. The report containing the key figures for 2024 has recently been published. Panteia prepared this report on behalf of the Training and Regulation Fund for Private Coach Transport (FSO). Stichting FSO is the implementation organisation of the social partners in the private coach transport sector and aims to finance and subsidise activities that promote good labour relations in the private coach transport sector.

Key figures 2024

As of 31 December 2024, there are 250 Dutch companies operating coaches. In total, these companies are estimated to have 3,796 vehicles, with permits for an average of around 15 coaches per company.

In 2024, the Dutch coach sector definitively left behind the difficulties of the COVID years. Even the rising costs due to high inflation caused by the prolonged war in Ukraine did not dampen the recovery. In 2024, Dutch coach operators jointly achieved 8.3 (+8%) billion passenger kilometres, of which around 5.7 billion were within the Netherlands and around 2.6 billion abroad. This was realised by covering 182 (+11%) million vehicle kilometres, with - when loaded- an average load of 45.3 (-2%) passengers per coach.

Total turnover in private coach transport by Dutch companies in 2024 amounts to €588 (+13%) million. Dutch companies provide employment to approximately 5,450 staff members.

“The Dutch coach sector has fully recovered from the difficult COVID years and achieved its highest ever turnover in 2024. The number of coaches is increasing, while the number of companies is decreasing. As a result, the sector is undergoing scaling-up. This is not surprising in a time when coach companies face major challenges in the areas of sustainability, digitalisation and the labour market. These challenges require substantial investments, which are simply easier to make when the business scale is larger. Despite challenging times, most companies look to the future with confidence.” – Sander van der Meulen, Panteia
