Ways to attract and retain workers
A new Eurofound report has been published about company practices to tackle labour shortages. Panteia is part of the Network of Eurofound Correspondents and contributed to the report by conducting a case study in the Netherlands.
In the context of persisting labour shortages in the EU, especially for certain occupations and sectors, the report looks at the policies organisations implement to attract and retain workers. One of the issues contributing to labour shortages relates to the skills needed in the workplace. Many employers report a mismatch between what new recruits were taught in educational institutions and the skills they need to successfully perform their job. To address this problem, some companies offer training programmes. One example of this is Dutch IT company Aurai, on which the case study conducted by Panteia focused. They offer traineeships for data scientists, providing work experience and, as the report states, "a strong technical foundation". This has proven to be an effective way to attract employees for themselves as well as client companies.
The report also looks at other issues that play a role in labour shortages, using case studies from different sectors and member states to provide examples of policies employers could consider implementing.
