Coach Sector Key Figures 2023

Panteia conducts annual research on the developments in coach transport among Dutch coach operators. The report, containing key figures for 2023, has recently been published. Panteia prepared this report on behalf of the Fonds Scholing en Ordening voor het besloten busvervoer (FSO). The FSO Foundation is the executive organization of social partners in the private bus transport sector and aims to finance and subsidize activities focused on promoting good labor relations in private bus transport.

Key Figures 2023:

As of December 31, 2023, there are 236 Dutch companies operating coaches. In total, these companies have an estimated 3,578 vehicles, with an average of approximately 15 coach licenses per company.

In 2023, the Dutch coach sector left behind the difficulties of the COVID-19 years. After years of restrictions, there were no COVID-19 measures in 2023. The demand for coach transport exploded as everyone sought to make up for missed corporate outings, school trips, events, and vacations. The increased costs due to high inflation caused by the prolonged war in Ukraine did not diminish this effect.

Dutch coach companies collectively covered 7.6 billion passenger kilometers in 2023, a 10% increase from the previous year. Of these, approximately 5.3 billion passenger kilometers were within the Netherlands, and about 2.3 billion passenger kilometers were abroad. This was achieved by covering 165 million vehicle kilometers (a 6% increase), with an average occupancy of 46.3 passengers per coach, a 3% increase.

The total revenue from private bus transport for Dutch companies amounts to €522 million, a 7% increase. Dutch companies employ around 4,500 personnel.
