Research on Legal Dilemmas of Multiple Nationalities
Panteia and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam have conducted a study, commissioned by the Ministerie van Sociale Zaken en Werkgelegenheid (Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment), into the legal dilemmas faced by Dutch citizens with multiple nationalities. The report maps the complexity and diversity of these dilemmas, based on legal analyses, interviews with experts and individuals with lived experiences, as well as data gathered through an open submission process.
The researchers highlight that multiple nationalities are often acquired by birth. The report identifies various types of dilemmas individuals with multiple nationalities may face, including issues related to marital law, family and inheritance law, conscription, and national security.
The findings reveal that people with multiple nationalities can encounter diverse dilemmas, depending on their specific nationalities and personal circumstances. However, these dilemmas are often unique and not widely experienced across the target group. Although some dilemmas are relatively rare, they can have profound consequences for those affected.
Respondents also highlighted the benefits of holding multiple nationalities, such as a broader sense of identity and greater opportunities in social, cultural, and economic spheres. Some expressed that the government should place more emphasis on these positive aspects, rather than focusing solely on the challenges.
The report calls for greater awareness and societal debate about the legal and practical implications of holding multiple nationalities.
